How I Discovered My Passion for a Content Creation Career

I have been attending San Juan College for more than a year now, and I’m going to graduate in the fall with my associate degree in Business Administration. After high school, I wasn’t sure what career I wanted to go into. My father recommended majoring in Business Administration because business was a “secure” career with many opportunities.

So, I started at San Juan College in the fall of 2025. Going into my first semester of college, I went straight into business courses because I completed my general education requirements as a dual credit high school student. As I took these courses and explored different business careers, I realized that none of them really caught my eye. I enjoyed learning about business, but I wanted a career where I could also be creative.

How I Discovered Content Creation

Looking back to high school, I was always asked what I wanted to major in college. I never had a solid answer. I considered different careers, from radiology to graphic design, but each one had its own pros and cons. If I chose radiology, I would have had to move to a city or travel about five hours away for school. On the other hand, my dad felt that graphic design was not the most stable career choice. Even though I understood his concerns, graphic design was something I truly enjoyed.

I took graphic design for three years in high school and loved it because I have always had a creative side. I learned how to design posters, magazines, door hangers, and business cards. I also learned how to communicate my ideas, work with a team, and accept feedback to improve my designs.

At the time, I didn’t realize those skills would connect to my future career. After learning more about digital marketing, I discovered that content creation combines creativity and business, which is exactly what I was looking for.

What I’ve Learned So Far

Through my marketing classes at San Juan College, I have learned that content creation is more than just making something look good. Before creating content, you have to understand who you are creating it for, what goals you want to achieve, and how your content can provide value to your audience.

One of the biggest things I have learned is the importance of understanding your audience. Content is not created for everyone, but it should be created with a specific group of people in mind. Learning about audiences helped me understand that businesses need to know their customers, their interests, and their needs before creating content that will connect with them.

Learning about SEO, social media, email marketing, and analytics has helped me see how content can support a business’s goals and create stronger connections with customers. I have also learned that content creation involves more than just the creative side. It requires planning, research, and understanding how different parts of digital marketing work together.

Some of the skills I have learned include:

Learning the Basics of SEO

Understanding the basics of SEO showed me how it helps content become easier to find online. Creating good content is important, but making sure people can actually find it is just as important.

Understanding Audiences

Knowing your audience is an important part of creating content. Understanding what people are interested in and what they need helps businesses create content that connects with them.

Creating SMART Goals

Creating SMART goals helps businesses set clear and realistic objectives. It also makes it easier to measure progress and see what is working.

Social Media Marketing

Different social media platforms can be used to reach different audiences. They also give businesses a way to connect with people and build stronger relationships with their customers.

Email Marketing

Email marketing gives businesses a way to stay connected with their audience by sharing updates, promoting products, and building long-term relationships.

Creating meaningful content is not just about making something visually appealing, but it is about creating something that reaches the right audience and provides value. These lessons have shown me that a successful content creator needs both creativity and strategy.

Why Content Creation Fits Me

Content creation is the career for me because it allows me to be creative and be more in touch with people through media. Understanding what people want and why they want it will help me create more thoughtful designs and meaningful content.

I enjoy that content creation combines creativity with problem-solving. I can use my design skills while also thinking about how content can help a business reach its goals. Every business has a different story, and I like the idea of helping share those stories in a way that connects with people.

My Future Goals

After graduating from San Juan College, I plan to transfer to Arizona State University to earn my bachelor’s degree in Digital Marketing. I want to continue improving my skills in content creation, branding, social media, and other areas of digital marketing.

In the future, I hope to use my skills to help small businesses and Native-owned businesses build their online presence. Many businesses have great products and stories to share, but they may not always have the resources or knowledge to create effective content. I would like to help them connect with more people and grow through digital marketing.

Advice for Other Students

If you are still trying to figure out what career you want, don’t worry if you don’t have everything planned out right away. I changed my mind several times before finding a career that felt right for me. My advice is to explore different classes, try new things, and pay attention to what interests you. Sometimes you discover your passion in places you did not expect. Building skills through projects and practice can also help you learn what you enjoy and prepare you for your future career.

Final Thoughts

When I first started college, I thought I was just working toward a Business Administration degree. I never expected to discover a career that combined my creativity and my interest in business. Finding content creation has helped me understand what I want my future to look like. I am excited to continue learning, transfer to Arizona State University, and build a career where I can create meaningful content and help businesses tell their stories.
