In today’s digital landscape, social media has become more than just a platform for connection between our peers. It has become a powerful area where brands and you (yes you!) can tell a story to make an impact. For anyone looking to build a career in this ever changing and dynamic field of social media mastering content creation is a vital skill to have.

As I’ve learned about Marketing in my educational career at SJC, Social Media has been the one format of Marketing that has stood out the most to me. It is the most spoken about and has become a part of millions daily lives. It’s only normal that marketing has also turned to this online world. You could also be a part of those who choose to grow their social media centric marketing skills.
There is more to social media content than just posting, it’s about understanding your audience, strategically planning your message, and making visually appealing content. Even after posting you’re not done as you should monitor metrics to see how well you’ve done in your story telling.
Here are what I’ve learned you will need to create impactful social media content today:
1. Understand Your Audience
Having an understanding of who your audience is the biggest part of building your story, this will tell you who you will be creating content for. You must keep them in mind during the whole process. This should go beyond just their basic demographics of age, gender, location. You need to truly understand your audience as whole, such as their values, interests, lifestyles, etc.
2. Plan Your Content Strategically
This will be the road map of your content. A well-defined content calendar won’t just be a schedule to follow, but a strategic tool. This will help ensure you have a consistent social media presence and aren’t last minute posting random ideas. On a content calendar you will map out, keep themes of your story, brainstorm specific topics for each post, and decide the most optimal time for publishing.
3. Make Visually Appealing Content
When starting your content creation you must think that this content whether picture or video will be the first point of contact. Visuals must be quickly appealing so have high-quality images and videos, meaning clear, well-lit and relevant visuals. Also consider that having consistent visual branding helps with recognition. Think about color palettes, fonts and even overall aesthetics to make users recognize content instantly. Remember that this builds brand recall and trust.
You can build a narrative in your content beyond just trying to sell something to them to build a connection. You must just consider what you’d want to achieve in doing so inspiring them, creating community, or solving a problem. The key to this is to be authentic and create content that resonates to your audience on a human level.
4. Optimize Your Performance Metrics
Creating the content is just half the process. You must understand how it is performing. Social media platforms will provide a variety of data which tells how users are interacting with your content. The data will show metrics like engagement rates, impression, click-through rates. Analyzing the data will show you what is working best with your audience. You can use these insights to refine future content strategies.

Building a career in social media storytelling will be an ongoing process of learning and adapting to new innovations. It requires that you stay informed on new trends, experiment with new formats, and continuously refine your creative and analytical marketing skills.
